Boundless Bali

What can we say about Bali. Its stunning natural sites, temples mixed with ancient Hindu traditions and ceremonies, effortless smiles and friendliness. This is a great eco and cultural tour that is set up in the traditional OBR unique perspective.

As usual we give you roads and cultural experiences that other tours do not use and an opportunity to see the real Bali - not the tourist view.

One thing we can say about Bali is that with Volcanoes in the middle, you are either going up (nothing too steep) or down with lots of windy roads that make for great cycling. Once we leave the city, cars and masses of mopeds are left behind leaving us to the open roads.
Ceremonies abound the island and with luck and timing we will pass many of these ancient traditional musical and costumed "parades" on the roads as we ride. Depending on the God and the day these ceremonies change in style. The villages, on the paved back roads we use, are constantly lined with traditional Penjors making for some peaceful and culturally visual riding. Hindu temples abound in every village we pass.

Welcome to Bali OBR style.

Schedule

Day:
1
Arrival in Kuta/airport--pick up and drop off at hotel with plenty of the day left to enjoy an ocean swim and cold beer.
Day:
2
Day to relax on beach for a swim, surf or eat some of the multitudes of fresh fruit available (my personal favourite is Mangosteen). Visit the ocean cliff-top temple situated just outside Kuta or enjoy the multitude of shopping nearby. Or try out an included surf lesson.
Day:
3
Our bike tour starts with a short transfer out of this congested area to the peace and openness of the coastal highway. With a nice 10km warm up along this flat road we turn upwards and north to Mount Batur on roads where terraced rice fields bask in harmony with the surrounding landscape. A sense of peace and stillness lays in the air. The climb is steady and not steep. An optional stop at the Bangli Temple is worthwhile for our first taste of Hindu religion. The ride ends with a stunning view of Mount Batur (most recent eruption was 40 years ago) and a great downhill towards the caldera/lake and rolling ride through the recent lava fields to our hotel on the lakeshore. Here we are surrounded by two volcanoes and the lake in between. Local hot spring available for some relief after first day’s ride.
Distance:
55km.
Day:
4
Up very early for a hike through the lava field to the top of Mount Batur. Here we stop for breakfast, which is cooked on the natural steam vents emanating from the volcanoes edges. Back down by around 10am for a short rest and lunch before we head for our most adventurous ride of the tour. Continuing along the calderas shore we turn up for a short steep climb onto a road not on the map, OBR style. Whatever creature is singing on this road makes for an eerie cool ride to the top where we have a view all the way to the ocean . A 10km drop delivers us to the ocean highway. There may be some sections that you will want to walk but otherwise entirely ride-able. But the real Bali lays along this road. A short 10 km ride on flats to Tulamben. A well-known scuba dive site and home of the Liberty that was sunk just offshore in WW2. Hotel.
Distance:
37km.
Day:
5
Optional morning snorkel on a shallow reef or dive the Liberty or sleep or relax on the beach. For those with no license you can take a quick intro lesson the night before. Dive and snorkel included in tour. After drying off and a snack we head for the afternoon ride to Basakih Temple which is Bali’s largest and most famous. Not only is this temple stunning but the setting is just as dramatic sitting at the base of Bali’s largest volcano. There is a sense of peace and calm that is unmistakable. A natural connection between man's creations and mother nature's. We will arrive on the full moon day so will experience this spectacular and ancient ceremony that takes place on this day. Local Guest House. At night OBR has a special treat. We have arranged a traditional dance/music for the locals in a small village nearby--sans tourists. This ancient dance is the Bali version of a strip tease without the stripping. Done with humour in mind.
Distance:
70km.
Day:
6
Up early for those wanting to visit the temple with the sunrise, total peace and no tourists. This is the way this temple should be visited. Sarongs must be worn and we will pay for the Sarong of your choice. Breakfast after and a great downhill, windy road arriving at the back side of the caldera for a unique view of it and the surrounding 3 volcanoes. A great morning ride. Continuing past Mount Batur, this day has a short climb but is mostly a great windy, downhill back south on paved back roads to Ubud.  Hotel. Nearby small local villages with streets lined with Penjor can be visited.
Distance:
50km.
Day:
7
Morning rafting adventure. Dry off and a snack and we are off on a great afternoon ride to Munduk. Heading on a different road back north, we cut through small villages again lined with Penjors and along and up past Bali's 3 famous crater lakes. The last 2 we are up on a road along a volcanic ridge looking way down into them. You can’t ask for a more exhilarating view. Beautiful. We stay in a hotel near a large waterfall on the downhill past the last crater lake.
Distance:
62km.
Day:
8
Leaving the ridge road we cut back downhill through back roads to the main road just before Singaraja. Up a few km on the best climb of the tour to waterfalls for a swim and after a short hike through the jungle. About a 10km coast downhill on paved back roads through cool local villages to the costal highway and our beautiful guest house. Pool and view of ocean.
Distance:
68km.
Day:
8
Relaxation day at the guesthouse and a feast with traditional music and dancers.
Day:
9
Short transfer past the small but busy city of Singaraja. Here we start riding. A nice short flat ride along the coast until we turn south taking back roads mainly downhill, all the way to the southern coastal highway, up the coastal highway for a few km to Perancak Point and a stunning view of the ocean. Last night/hotel.
Distance:
82km.
Day:
10
Drive back to Kuta hotel, relax, swim.
Day:
10/11
Fly out.
