These days parents of 10-year-olds are worried about how their child will cross the road. They are scared to let their child go out with children from a different section of the society thinking that their child will not fit in with them or he/she will not be able to take care of himself/herself. Parents are putting their fears in the minds of the children and not letting them explore.
In this modern world as parents, we are being overprotective about our children and not letting them grow to their full potential. I understand the society is getting worse or at least the media is projecting it in such a way that we feel we are no longer secure in our own neighbourhood. But being overprotective and not letting children do things on their own is not going to help either. As parents you are not going to be the with children all the time, sooner or later they have to go out and fend for themselves, won’t you want your child to be intelligent, strong and know the ways to handle the world.
Parents should ensure that children learn survival skills to handle themselves and develop their overall personality. Think about it, won’t you love to see your child being smart and intelligent, handling the day-to-day situation with easy rather than just be buried in books and not having any practical experience or knowing how to survive this world. The world is getting more and more complicated with all the fake news, lies, war, scamming schemes, no exposure to nature and living a regimented fake life. Our generation can actually see the change happening more clearly than any other. Hence it becomes our responsibility to make our children self-reliant to survive this every changing world.
There are various survival skills program started around the city; I strongly recommend all children should go through a survival skill program. In these programs, they can learn how to handle themselves in a critical situation and not panic. The will learn things like how to light a fire, use knife carefully, pitch tent, grow basic vegetables at home, gardening, eat healthy, keep fit, learn to overcome their fears, be part of a team and learn effective leadership. This is done with proper supervision under the guidance of an experienced team with the utmost safety. Such survival skills are important in the modern world. Think about it, what is more, scary living in a world without the basic skills to survive or being confident that your child is prepared to face the world.
Studies have shown that children who have learnt basic survival skills are confident, empowered people who will excel in life, no matter what the situation in life is. They on their own start to think outside the box and become problem solvers. Children learn fast in the outside environment, they have this natural yearning to learn and survive. You must have seen children playing in the mud, building a fortress, pretending to cook, etc. If you leave a kid in nature they will be happily exploring in nature. It is exciting and fun for them. And all these things they learn subconsciously become part of who they are. It becomes the responsibilities of parents and school to ensure that children learn basic survival skills.
